With the World Series now taking up seven months of the year, I decided that 2001 would be my last year with the Bay of Plenty side. I wanted one chance to coach in the first division and this would be it. Despite winning our opening match of the first-division season against defending champions Wellington, and pushing Auckland to the limit the following week, the elevation proved challenging for the side in its first season back. By the end of the year, we had collected just two first-division victories and were forced into a promotion/relegation match with Hawke’s Bay. Fortunately, we came out on top with a 32–12 victory in front of our home fans in Rotorua.

My Bay of Plenty journey had come full circle. I ended my tenure there having played for the Bay of Plenty on 81 occasions and having coached the senior side for seven seasons. They were back in the first division, where I always thought they belonged. It may not have always been pretty but I was a loyal Bay man and I had been enormously proud to play for and to coach that side. Many a good man came through those teams, and the Steamers will always have a special place in my heart. For now, though, it was obvious that my heart belonged elsewhere. It was time to devote all my attention to sevens.
